MFL
โ
At Hallam Fields we want to give children opportunities and experiences to develop their skills in a Modern Foreign Language. We study French throughout Hallam Fields. We plan our curriculum to encompass the aims and programmes of study in the National Curriculum for Key Stage 2 and to be progressive so that the children develop their skills, knowledge and understanding throughout the four years with us. For each subject we have identified Key Concepts which we will revisit throughout the children's time at Hallam Fields so that we can develop their understanding of how key concepts link between different topics and units of work, helping them to apply their learning and remember more.

You will find below links to our overview of MFL, our Key concepts and we will be adding some examples of work.

Intent
At Hallam Fields Junior School, we strive for children to develop an interest in learning other languages in a way that is enjoyable and stimulating. We encourage children’s confidence and curiosity about language and develop their awareness of cultural differences and traditions in France. The skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing are embedded in our teaching to enable children to use and apply their French learning in a variety of contexts and lay the foundations for future language learning as they move on to Secondary school and beyond. Our MFL curriculum is designed to progressively develop children skills in languages, through regular taught lessons. Children progressively acquire, use and apply a growing bank of vocabulary organised around topics.
โ
Implementation
We follow the ‘Kapow Primary’ Scheme of work to ensure coverage and progression across school. All of our children will have discreet, weekly language lessons with their class teacher. The units of lessons develop children’s knowledge of Speaking and listening, Reading, Writing, Grammar, Language learning strategies and Intercultural understanding. Lessons offer lots of opportunities for cross curricular learning too with topics such as Space, The Olympics and The Water Cycle.
โ
Impact
The teachers continuously assess children’s knowledge and understanding throughout the lessons and are able to revisit throughout the week and across the curriculum to check the children are remembering key learning. Children will be able to see the progress that they are making and their books will move with them through the school to support their learning journeys. Children will transfer to KS3 effectively and successfully and will be well prepared to continue and develop their language skills.
